Almost two years ago, Margaux INC was born. Margaux started her company with $50.00 in her pocket and a pack of poorly cut business cards from Kinkos. She had always been a entreprenuer with a dream of running her own business. Despite her motivation and excitement, people told Margaux that her business would never work. They thought she was too young to manage it.
When Margaux discovered Indiebizchicks.com, she was overjoyed! This website young, women business owners together from around the world. This is the best site for small business advice, support, and tips of the trade. Margaux had the opportunity to chat with Crissy, founder of Indie Biz Chicks.
How did you come to start Indie Biz Chicks? ”I started the website because I knew there were a lot of women in their twenties and thirties who were interested in something more than your standard corporate job. Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot of info on the internet aimed at this bracket of women on how to start, grow, and manage a business. Making the transition between employee and entrepreneur can be tough, especially when you don’t know where to start. Hopefully, I can help make the process easier.”
Why did you decide to set it up as a Podcast? “Partly because my childhood dream was to be a talk show host! Oprah went national when I was around 8 and I was definitely intrigued by the concept of getting paid to talk to people! On the other hand, podcasting really is the new media. It’s a lot easier for someone to download my podcast and listen to the information while working out, driving around town, or cleaning the house, rather than sit at a computer for hours reading it. Of course, I still put quality info on the site, but I also want to reach out to people who prefer audio.”
What do you hope to achieve with Indie Biz Chicks? “As I mentioned before in my response to the first question, I really hope that I can provide the info women need to start and grow their businesses. Whether it is helping someone learn how to buy a domain name, write a press release, or self publish a book, I hope that my site is able to help point them in the right direction.”
Where do you see Indie Biz Chicks in 5 years? “I hope to form a real community of women business owners. People will be able to be introduced to each other by reading the profiles on the site or listening to interviews on the podcast. I’m also going to be holding monthly round table discussions on a conference line, which will be another way for us all to connect with each other. Since every one is at a different place in their business, and every one has their own individual strengths, I think there is a lot we can learn from each other.”
Any advice to new business owners? “As a new business owner, you are probably very excited, some what frightened, and more than likely, a little overwhelmed. It’s normal to feel that way. Have faith in yourself, and give yourself a solid year of working your butt off before you start wondering where your profits are. It’s going to take a little time to build up your business – nothing happens overnight. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to ask for help or admit you don’t know how to do something. You’ll be amazed at how helpful others can be and how much they’re willing to teach you.”
